Meanshile, the de factor US embassy in Taipei - the American Institute in Taiwan - issued a statement supportaing Taiwan's "meaningful participation" in ICAO. Taiwan was expelled from all UN-related agencies when Beijing replaced Taipei to represent China in the United Naitons in 1971. In 2013, Taiwan was allowed for the first time to attend ICAO Assembly as Taipei-Beijing ties improved. But since President Tsai Ing-wen took office on 20 May 2016, she has refused to accept Beijing's One China Policy, causing Beijing to slap sanctions on Taiwan, including suspending high-level talks, barring Taiwan from attending world events and llimitting the number of tour groups visiting Taiwan. Το υπουργείο Εξωτερικών της Κίνας ανακοίνωσε σήμερα πως διατύπωσε διαμαρτυρία στην «αρμόδια πλευρά» στις ΗΠΑ αφού ο εκλεγμένος πρόεδρος Ντόναλντ Τραμπ είχε τηλεφωνική συνομιλία με την πρόεδρο της Ταϊβάν Τσάι Ινγκ-γουέν.
Η αρχή της «αδιαίρετης Κίνας» αποτελεί την πολιτική βάση των σινοαμερικανικών σχέσεων, πρόσθεσε το υπουργείο, καλώντας την «αρμόδια πλευρά» να συνεχίσει αυτή την πολιτική και να χειριστεί προσεκτικά το ζήτημα της Ταϊβάν ώστε να αποφευχθεί άσκοπη διατάραξη των σχέσεων.
Η δεκάλεπτη τηλεφωνική επικοινωνία με την ηγεσία της Ταϊβάν ήταν η πρώτη ενός εκλεγμένου προέδρου ή προέδρου των ΗΠΑ αφότου ο πρόεδρος Τζίμι Κάρτερ αναγνώρισε διπλωματικά την Κίνα το 1979 και αποδέχθηκε ότι η Ταϊβάν αποτελεί μέρος μιας «αδιαίρετης Κίνας».
