A Malta-flagged container ship was targeted with three missiles in the Red Sea while sailing from Djibouti to the Saudi city of Jeddah, causing explosions near the ship, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey. The attack came just a few hours the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) announced that it has shot down five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Red Sea, claiming that the UAVs presented an imminent threat to the US-led coalition and merchant vessels in the region. Η ιταλική φρεγάτα Virginio Fasan, παρέχοντας προστασία σε εμπορικό πλοίο στο πλαίσιο της επιχείρησης «Ασπίδες» στην Ερυθρά Θάλασσα, απέκρουσε πολλαπλές επιθέσεις Μη Επανδρωμένων Αεροσκαφών (UAV) από περιοχές που ελέγχονται από τους Χούθι ενώ κατέρριψε και ένα UAV με το πυροβόλο της.
Οι επιθέσεις από τις περιοχές που ελέγχονται από τους Χούθι θέτουν σε κίνδυνο τις ζωές των πληρωμάτων και υποβαθμίζουν την ασφάλεια της ναυσιπλοΐας, επισημαίνεται σε ανακοίνωση της διοίκησης της επιχείρησης «Ασπίδες».
Επισημαίνεται ότι δεν υπήρξαν τραυματίες από την επίθεση και το πλοίο συνέχισε κανονικά το ταξίδι του.
Η επιχείρηση «Ασπίδες» έχει αμυντικό σκοπό και προστατεύει τη ναυτιλία από επιθέσεις στη θάλασσα και από αέρος, επισημαίνεται στην ανακοίνωση.
